This happens whenever I play a video or start LFS or shift from windowed mode to full screen and vice versa.

I googled a bit, and a guy had a similar problem which was solved by running "xdg-screensaver suspend $WINDOWID" on "Konsole".... now, I don't know what the hell is Konsole apart from being some kind of program that you don't just download and install, but you build it  , which I am oblivious to

I suspect it's some kind of hidden screen saver bug or something and if anyone of you computer geeks knows how to solve the problem I would be happy to let you pass me on the track safely (f)

This is related to Linux.
I guess you're using Windows, right?

Just quessing, but if it is a screensaver problem, have you tried to disable/change it?

Post subject:

@Nick7 - yes, I'm using Win XP
@Frozeni - I disabled it, also disabled monitor power off at any time

Graphic card is 8400GS and I'm using the latest driver

Install Windows 7 8)

Well, comp isn't that great:
Athlon 4600+ 64 Dual core
RAM 2Gb 667MHz
graphic card as stated above

Do you think it would work well / better than on XP?

Post subject:

No, dont try 7. XP da best. Dont try windows7, bad experience for me.

Tbh, Win7 is really good OS.
Will work completely fine on that spec, and you'll have less gfx issues under Win7.
Performance-wise quite similar.
Install on different partition to try ;)

Better, yes.

When somebody is talking about XP I get the feeling we go back 10 years in time :fp:

Easy for you to say :P

On topic: so you think my current configuration will support Win7 well?
I wanna be absolutely sure about this, since it's going to take a whole day to reinstall it and set everything right.

Post subject:

Yes.

And why is it easy for me to say?

Post subject:

Because of the difference of living standards in our two countries.

And tnx for the advice, I will install Win7 when I get some time to do that (f)

Post subject:

I think it has nothing to do with living standards, I had Win7 happily running on a 'slower' laptop then your current system. It's just laziness and/or fear of the unknown. Windows 7 is comparable with XP only a whole lot more stable. It uses a tad more diskspace but thats about it. XP gets status end of life next year anyway.

XP is ok. Windows 7 fucked up everything for me :D

Since I installed Win7 - which is... since available, I never had a BSOD.
Works great. It *is* quite better then XP.

My current system is actually an upgrade from a week a go. Before that I had Athlon 2600, 1GB RAM 333MHz and Geforce 6600  . I asked some people who are in computers more than me and they didn't suggest switching to Win7 on that configuration.

That's why I asked repeatedly here for confirmation whether it's safe to try Win7 on this one.

Tnx, Nick! :)

Which version of Win7 should I chose? I've got 64bit processor, so should I go for that one?
Should I go for Pro versions, ultimate or just simple home edition? I plan to use it for home purposes, so it's mostly internet, videos, games, no graphic design or any other demanding programs. I want to make it as simple as possible, but effective for these activities, so would home edition do the job?

@Litro: sorry, but I'm gonna give it a go :P

Yes. It's not really about the processor. 32 bit OS can only address 4 Gb RAM max (videocard RAM included) which is nothing these days.

4 Gb (-video memory) is recommended. Browsers eat a lot of memory nowadays with these tab features.

If you do not plan to upgrade your RAM, choose 32-bit, as it will use slightly less RAM.
If you plan to upgrade to 4GB RAM (or more), then use 64-bit version.

As for basic differences between versions, Dave posted link ;)
There are features that are not needed tho.. generally, Professional is best for most.
Ultimate has few more features, but most are not needed.

Tnx guys, will give it a go when I get some spare time, it will be home or pro 32, as I'm not planing on upgrading RAM for the moment (f)

Installed Win7.... but it didn't solve the problem, it helped a bit though. Now it doesn't go black for 1-2 seconds, but for like 0,5 sec only. I'm confused
It's not that I can't live with this problem, but still...

Btw, I don't see such a big improvement between Win XP and Win7 (bare in mind though that I'm only a PC user, not a PC pro). Might be because it's only 32-bit edition?

Shame :/

Do the black screens happen always with the same time limit or randomly?

And if you play some other video game, do the black screens appear there too?

No 32 or 64 is basically only to circumstance the 4 Gb (RAM + video RAM) limit. Actually I do not understand why there need to be a 32 bit Win7 edition, people only decide to do stupid things this way :D

The big difference is not the speed but it's the stability and support.

I'd say same time limit, shorter though than on Win XP.
I don't play any other video games. It used to happen when I load the video on a video player, but I just checked and it doesn't anymore :) . I updated Windows in the meantime and the black screen problem while loading video is gone now.

Well, as for me, I listened to Nick's advice, because I only have 2Gb RAM.

Tnx for explanations. It seams to run quite happily on my comp, no bottlenecks so far :)

Sounds quite weird still O_o Like you said before it could be something wrong with the screensaver.. You could try playing around with the settings of the screensaver and see if it has any affect to the reqularity of the black screens :/

Other than that, i'm completely lost

I didn't have that issue with my previous graphic card, no blinking just straight to what it was commanded to do. But no big deal really as it is now. Before that it was quite annoying for eyes.

Frozeni wrote:

No, it's not random... it's just when I go to full screen from windowed mode and the other way around. Other than that, it's fine
